A Glimpse into the Future

On the 23rd and 24th of April 2024, I had the honor of participating as a keynote speaker at the Media Summit 2024 in Zurich. Organized by Swiss Deluxe Hotels, the association of 39 Five-Star Hotels in Switzerland, the event was a landmark gathering for marketing professionals in the luxury hotel segment. I attended the event with Sukesh Das, the co-author of my book “Rethink Hotel Marketing”. The event discussed a lot of great topics about marketing in the luxury hotel segment, one of the key topics was the power of artificial intelligence (AI) in hotel marketing.

A Perfect Setting for Big Ideas

The meticulous organization by Ms. Evelyn Gorgos and Swiss Deluxe Hotels team created an ideal setting for engaging discussions about the digital future of luxury hotels. Hosted at The Dolder Grand, the summit benefited from the hotel’s exceptional service and hospitality, setting the perfect stage for sharing and developing big ideas. My presentation, inspired by my upcoming book “Rethink Hotel Marketing” and my experience in holistic digital strategies, delved into several crucial aspects of modern hotel marketing.

I explored the question in my presentation: Is AI a Game Changer in Hotel Marketing? AI is often hyped, but it’s important to remember that AI is a tool, not a strategy. Changes in marketing technology and user behavior, driven by generative AI, are set to revolutionize the industry. But where are the hidden opportunities?

Unveiling Hidden Opportunities

We discussed the hidden forces shaping digital marketing: Technical SEO, the Buyer’s Journey, and a Data-Driven Content Strategy.

Technical SEO: It’s the core of your digital strategy and the foundation of all digital tactics. Sending the proper signals to search engines is mandatory and key to success.

Buyer’s Journey: Delivering the right content at the right time is essential for capturing new guests.

Data-Driven Content Strategy: A holistic content strategy affects all areas of digital marketing. Key factors include content research based on the Buyer´s Journey and keyword data, content quality through journalistic expertise, consistent publication on relevant channels, and content optimization based on analytics.

The Importance of Becoming Generative AI Ready

As we move forward, it’s essential for hotel websites to become Generative AI ready. This readiness ensures that your digital presence not only keeps pace with evolving technologies but also leverages AI to enhance user engagement, boost visibility, and optimize the direct booking process. Being prepared for the Generative AI revolution is key to staying competitive in the market.

AI’s Role and the Future of Marketing

The summit’s discussions highlighted AI’s potential to revolutionize marketing processes while also raising concerns about copyright issues and quality assurance in the luxury segment. AI offers opportunities for improved efficiency and personalized content, crucial for search engine optimization. Platforms like Bing are already experimenting with tools like Copilot, hinting at the future of search engine marketing. Google’s Search Generative Experience (SGE) is pushing the boundaries of how AI can transform search results, making it imperative for hotels to adapt to these advancements.

Reaching New Target Groups

Another significant focus was on adapting to new target groups, particularly Generation Z and millennials. I emphasized the importance of budget separation: 80% should be invested in proven strategies that drive sales from traditional customer segments, while 20% should be used for experimentation and adaptation to new media and channels to effectively reach younger generations.
